SquareMeal came to us with ambitions to strengthen its digital platform and better serve both users (diners, event planners) and venues/restaurants. Their key requirements included:

  • A polished, responsive web presence showcasing restaurants, bars, private dining, venues, and wedding venues.
  • An ability for users to search, filter, and book restaurants and event venues.
  • A listing / directory system for venues, restaurants, with rich metadata (cuisine, price, location, reviews).
  • Integration of a loyalty / rewards program (SquareMeal Rewards) so users earn points when booking.
  • Editorial content: reviews, news, restaurant guides, “best of” listings.
  • Scalability and performance, to handle large traffic and many listings.
  • SEO optimization to capture restaurant-related and venue-search queries.
  • Admin tools / CMS for the SquareMeal team to manage listings, content, rewards, bookings, etc.
  • Integration with partner systems (venue booking, contact, payments) and capacity for future features/extensions.

Key technical and functional challenges encountered during the SquareMeal platform redevelopment:

In planning the project, the following challenges needed to be addressed:

  • Handling a large, varied database of restaurants, event venues, wedding venues, private dining rooms, each with many attributes (cuisine, capacity, images, reviews, offers).
  • Designing a search / filtering system robust enough to let users narrow down by cuisine, price, location, type, occasion, etc., with good performance.
  • Integrating booking / reservation workflows in a user-friendly way, without too much friction.
  • Implementing the loyalty / rewards mechanism in a way that is transparent, reliable, and tied to bookings.
  • Maintaining content / editorial workflows (reviews, guides, “top 100” lists) and tying them into the directory / listing content.
  • Ensuring performance (fast page loads, caching, optimizations) with many images, data, traffic.
  • SEO challenges: preserving or improving search rankings when redesigning, managing structured data (reviews, ratings), managing duplicate content, clean URLs.
  • Providing admin / dashboard tools for internal teams (listing management, booking management, rewards management).
  • Future extensibility: ability to plug in new features (promotions, loyalty enhancements, more venue types, mobile apps) easily.

Building a Scalable, User-Centric Platform for Restaurant and Venue Discovery

To address their needs and challenges, here’s what we proposed / implemented:

Custom CMS & Listing Management

  • Developed a powerful content management backend supporting restaurants, venues, private dining rooms, wedding venues, and editorial content such as guides and reviews.
  • Created a rich metadata model for managing cuisines, pricing tiers, images, reviews, capacity, geography, amenities, and promotions.
  • Built interfaces for adding, updating, and managing listings, offers, and reward-related configurations.

Advanced Search & Filtering Engine

  • Implemented a faceted search UI allowing users to filter by location, cuisine, price range, capacity, and occasion.
  • Optimized database queries and indexing for fast, responsive filtering even under high load.
  • Added pagination, lazy loading, and caching mechanisms to enhance performance and reduce server strain.

Booking & Rewards Integration

  • Integrated a streamlined booking system allowing users to reserve restaurants or venues directly from the site.

Editorial & ‘Best Of’ Content Module

  • Developed publishing templates and workflows for editors and critics to manage and link content to listings.
  • Automated generation of data-driven 'Top 100' restaurant lists combining editorial insights and user data.

SEO & Performance Optimization

  • Implemented SEO best practices: clean, semantic URLs, meta tags, title/description, canonical tags, internal linking.
  • Added structured data / schema markup (especially for reviews, ratings, listings) so search engines better understand content.
  • Performance optimizations: image compression, lazy loading, CSS/JS minification, caching layers, CDN for static assets.
  • Implemented monitoring and performance tracking to catch bottlenecks or slow pages.
